SUMMARY:52nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Jurors:\nMcKenzie Beynon\, Founder & Co-Owner\, Kink Contemporary\nAnastasia Pantsios\, Photographer & Editor\, CoolCleveland.com\nGina Washington\, Art Instructor & Co-Founder\, The Visit Arts Collective\n\n\nFeaturing a diverse array of 58 remarkable pieces\, this year’s exhibition offers a vibrant spectrum of artistic expression. From classical tastes encompassing oil paintings and landscapes to avant-garde sculptures pushing the boundaries of creativity\, there is something to captivate every art enthusiast. The 52nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition at Valley Art Center is a celebration of artistic diversity\, a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary art. We invite all art enthusiasts to explore this fusion of visual and literary artistry. \nReturning this year is the partnership with Heights Arts\, culminating in the Ekphrastacy – Artists Talk + Poets Respond event scheduled for December 1 at 6pm. The current Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate\, Siaara Freeman\, and a cadre of accomplished poets are guiding this creative exchange of visual and spoken word artistry. \nTogether\, they will craft and recite poems directly inspired by the captivating artworks on display at the 52nd Annual Juried Art Exhibition\, weaving a harmonious tapestry of artistic expression. “Ekphrastacy at its core is an interactive art process\,” says Siaara Freeman. “It is a chance for artists to become familiar with one another’s work alongside the opportunity to explore new mediums and methods of creation.” The tradition of the Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate\, conferred by Heights Arts\, continues to thrive as the longest-running poet laureate program in the state. Ekphrastacy – Artists Talk + Poets Respond event\, as well as the Opening Reception\, are free to the public.

SUMMARY:Author Signing: Nancy Christie
DESCRIPTION:Nancy Christie\, author of Mistletoe Magic\, will sign books on December 3rd from 1-3 pm. \nABOUT THE BOOK: MISTLETOE MAGIC AND OTHER HOLIDAY TALES is about the wonder and excitement of the holiday season\, as shown through the experiences of the characters in these eight stories. \nStories include: \nLucinda and the Christmas List – A young woman needs a dose of elf-magic to regain her Christmas spirit. (Originally published in Peripheral Visions and Other Stories) \nThe Snow Globe – An elderly woman\, through a gift from her late husband\, finds a way to fill her empty house and life. (Originally published in The Saturday Evening Post) \nThe Little Red Sock – Despite past disappointments\, a little boy still believes that Santa will come. \nTwelve Days Before Christmas – A harried mother of three learns that\, despite a series of mishaps\, the season is always better when shared with family. (Originally published in Bethlehem Writers Roundtable) \nChristmas Present – A middle-aged woman is reminded that the best Christmas presents are those we give to others. \nCharley Catches the Christmas Spirit – A seemingly straightforward case of credit card fraud leads to a surprising and heartwarming conclusion for the thief\, the victim\, and the team from Adams Investigation Service. \nHoliday Reunion – A young woman realizes that even unexpected (and somewhat irritating) houseguests can make the holiday special. \nMistletoe Magic – The characters in these four interlinked vignettes find that a simple mistletoe decoration can lead to an outcome that is more than what was expected or hoped for. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ohio-based Nancy Christie is the award-winning author of two short story collections\, Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories and Peripheral Visions and Other Stories (published by Unsolicited Press)\, and three non-fiction books: The Gifts of Change (Atria/Beyond Words) and Rut-Busting Book for Writers and Rut-Busting Book for Authors (both by Mill City Press). SUMMARY:Elf\, The Musical - Encore!
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, CVLT broke box office records by selling out the entire run of “Elf\, the Musical” before the curtain had risen on opening night! Audiences raved\, but many were disappointed at being unable to get a ticket. This year for Christmas\, we’re giving you a gift: Buddy is back! CVLT presents this encore production with many of the cast returning\, including John Kolar in the title role. \nAdapted from one of the most beloved modern Christmas movies\, “Elf the Musical” transforms the story (originally a vehicle for actor Will Farrell) into a theatrical holiday treat for the whole family. “Elf” features songs by the Tony Award nominated Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway\, The Wedding Singer) and a script by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie\, The Producers\, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). The New York Times called it “splashy\, peppy\, sugar-sprinkled holiday entertainment!” and Variety said “ELF is happy enough for families\, savvy enough for city kids and plenty smart for adults!” \nChagrin Valley Little Theatre’s production runs weekends from November 17 through December 17\, with performances on Fridays\, Saturdays and select Sundays. Evening performances begin at 7:30 PM on Fridays Nov. 17 & 24\, Dec. 1\, 8 & 15 as well as Saturdays Nov. 25\, & Dec. 9. Matinees at 2 PM on Saturdays Nov. 18\, Dec. 2 & 16\, and Sundays Nov. 26\, Dec. 3\, 10\, & 17. Tickets are $21 with a $4 discount for students\, seniors\, and military. Advance reservations and early arrival are highly recommended\, as sellouts are anticipated once again! \nNOVEMBER 26 – FRIENDS OF WOMENSAFE SPONSORED PERFORMANCE\nJunction Auto Family is sponsoring the 11/26 performance as a fundraiser for Friends of WomenSafe. Free refreshments and cookies included. This performance’s free concessions provided by WomenSafe.

SUMMARY:Author Signing: Judy Rousuck
DESCRIPTION:Judy Rousuck\, author of Please Write\, will sign books on December 10th from 1-3 pm. \nABOUT THE BOOK: An epistolary novel with a twist\, Please Write chronicles the correspondence between Vivienne\, the alter ego of a recently widowed Cleveland artist\, and Zippy\, a mixed-breed terrier rescued off the streets of Baltimore. Their letters change and enrich their lives as well as that of Zippy’s owner\, Pamela\, a harried journalist whose life is unraveling. \nCombining the canine viewpoint of A Dog’s Purpose with the poignant style of The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society\, Please Write\, with Disney-like charm\, delivers a distinctive account of coping with heartbreak and loss through the power of imagination and love. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR: J. WYNN ROUSUCK is the theater critic at Baltimore’s NPR affiliate\, WYPR\, and the former longtime theater critic at The Baltimore Sun. \nShe has been published in magazines ranging from American Theatre to Dog World\, and her writing has been honored by organizations including the Dog Writers Association of America. \nShe has taught writing and theater at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Critics Institute\, Goucher College\, and in various programs at Johns Hopkins University. \nHer award-winning short stories have appeared in Atticus Review and Creative Loafing Tampa Bay\, and her interviews can be found in the book\, Hairspray: The Roots and Conversations with Neil Simon. \nA graduate of Wellesley College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism\, she was a National Endowment for the Humanities Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan and a visiting student in the graduate playwriting program at Brown University. \nPlease Write is part of her family heritage: Her father was a dog judge and his oldest brother wrote one of the first books about Boston Terriers. \nShe lives in Baltimore with her husband Alan Fink and their Boston Terrier\, Juno. \nPlease Write is her first novel.  Listen to an interview with the author here.
